Acer Aspire 5553G: AMD quad-core in a 15.6″ laptop
This 15.6-inch model from Acer, shipping the Phenom X4 II N930 relies entirely on the power and nothing about mobility.
The Aspire 5553G-carbide N934G64Mn AMD. A quad-core processor, a graphics card acceptable and a good ability to drive are its main assets. However, autonomy is not at the rendezvous and heating problems and miners-are felt.
The expectations before test
Among the machines available this summer and return in the ranges of Acer notebooks, there is the Aspire 7551G (laptop screen 17.3 inches), but also its most consistent copy, with a 15.6 inch screen the 5553G. He also shipped a platform “AMD Vision Premium”, that is to say, destined to desktop applications, but also advanced multimedia and possibly games. Sold the same price as its counterpart of 17.3 inches, is it better than the latter? Response in this test.
The reality
The Aspire 5553G is a little ball of power on paper. It loads the Danube platform from AMD, which corresponds to a quadruple heart CPU Phenom X4 II N930 (2 GHz), one carrying a motherboard chipset with RS880M integrated graphics (ATI Radeon HD 4225) and dedicated graphics card (in this case a Mobility HD 5650). This set, promising on paper, is supported by 4 GB of DDR3 memory and 640GB hard drive.
Look unchanged
Evacuate immediately the question of aesthetics as the 5553G opts for the same chassis as the 7551G, it is brimming with fake-brushed aluminum hands, an outline of shiny black plastic keyboard, keyboard with numeric keypad “chiclet by Acer ” (separate keys, but not really chiclet) and a touchpad multipoint quite responsive and pleasant to the touch.
Defects quite annoying!
The 15.6-inch screen offers definition 1366 x 768 pixels. Although a team of brilliant LCD panel, rather flattering colors, the results obtained with our optical probe has been disappointing. Indeed, we measured a brightness of 195 cd/m2 and a small contrast ratio of 557:1! Looking at our control film, we see that blacks are actually very shallow, which is quite annoying. Another disappointment, the quality of sound from the speakers is simply more than mediocre. To take advantage of multimedia in good conditions, he missed!
Two graphics chips for display !
We had already found, AMD has made progress on the overall consumption of its mobile platforms. Thus, 5553G uses at least 22 watts and 87 watts maximum, which is correct for this configuration. If it is 14 watts more than the Aspire 7551G under conditions similar test, this is explained by the fact that the integrated graphics chipset was not present in the 17.3 “model. but also because, on the 5553G (15.6 “in), the integrated graphics is not really turned off by the driver, but simply mothballed power to take control of the dedicated graphics card when you unplug the PC sector. It therefore continues to consume to avoid an interruption that you display too much. It is also possible to switch from one to the other graphics cards due to pilots.
Things are heating up a bit
However, putting such a platform in such a small chassis, end moreover (2.7 cm maximum thickness), is not without risk: sustained activity, the temperature of the palm rest up to 40 ° C and the laptop, 48 ° C. What heat up when the PC made on the knees, but nothing very dramatic, however.
End with independence: less than two hours in our standard test conditions, which really is not terrible for a PC format. It remains in the average 15.6 inches equipped with the platform a little swollen.
Same platform, same conclusion except for one thing!
As we mentioned in our review of the Aspire 7551G, the AMD platform performs well in all our tests. In pure applications, video encoding is not his strong point, unfortunately, but otherwise, everything is going very well. The hard drive 5400 rpm is undoubtedly the most disabling of the machine because the speed of rotation of the plates does not trade at very high speeds.
Mode 1366 x 768 pixels, ATI Radeon HD 5650 performs better than the 17.3 “model. It is possible to play correctly, but still reasonable in the graphic settings of your favorite songs (note 6.70 in Windows 7).
Test and review conclusions
The Aspire 5553G justifies its price of 799 euros per internal components powerful enough. It has however some drawbacks: low autonomy, low screen or high volume (39.3 dB maximum). This 15.6 “is not intended to leave the house, but more to serve as main PC with the ability to move … provided, however, not too far from electrical outlets.
