Apple Mac mini 2.53 GHz

Extremely compact central unit

Launch by Apple in 2005, the Mac mini has been described as a extremely compact central unit. Since the launch, its external power has remained the same, taking the form of a “brick” which is actually almost half the volume of the entire unit. Its white plastic appearance hasn’t stopped it from being successful.
Those who want to see technical features that meet the requirements of the moment will not be disappointed: Apple has integrated Intel processors to the Mac Mini, instead of the IBM PowerPC processors. The Mac mini range is thus divided into two machines. The former consists of a unit with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz, 2GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. The latter has a processor of 2.53 GHz, 4 GB memory and a 320GB hard drive. Together, they share an extensive connection made by 5 USB ports, dual DisplayPort video output and mini-DVI port FireWire 800, Ethernet port, audio input and output, separate WiFi and Bluettooth). Both levels also have Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics solution and the drive / SuperDrive DVD burner.

Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Operating System

Apple-Mac-mini-2.53-GHzThe operating system on the Mac mini is the Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and is equipped with iLife 09 (iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band and iWeb 09). Web and multimedia uses pose no problem for these machines as they can do very well with software known to occupy much space, such as Final Cut Express or Photoshop. They are recommended for advanced home use since they use a multimedia powerhouse dedicated to listening to music or watching movies. The remote control can be purchased separately, as with all Apple computers.
Without a keyboard and a mouse, the installation is done easily, yet independently from the connected devices. However, the use of the Apple keyboard proves to be more comfortable; the shortcuts for Mac OS X are also clearly indicated.

Test and review conclusions

Although they are very performant machines, the Mac minis are a bit expensive for central units only. The first iMacs that also have keyboard, mouse, screen are a more convenient choice, financially speaking.

The positive points (pros)

Elegant design, complete software set for Web and multimedia.

The negative points (cons)

Optional remote for Front Row prices.
