Dell Inspiron 1370 13Z
A 13.3-inch Hot, powerful but not so autonomous
With a configuration that attempts a compromise between power and low power consumption, this notebook disappoints on the second criterion.
The laptop Dell Inspiron 13Z offers a 13.3-inch diagonal and a low energy configuration of Intel-based Pentium Dual core SU4100.
The expectations before test
With this Inspiron 13Z, Dell offers a 13.3-inch notebook just below 2 kg. We will therefore gladly an Atom platform, reserved for smaller devices. The configuration is based on a chipset GS45 chipset and GMA 4500MHD, with a Pentium processor SU4100 with low energy consumption, with 4GB of DDR3 RAM at 800 MHz. All for a good self Announced: 11 pm with an eight-cell battery!
The reality
The design of the device is very simple. The case provides the bare minimum, with a single LED indicator is switched on. No witness for the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, keyboard or even hard disk activity, is certainly an original choice to scrounge for autonomy. Note that the model we had in our hands was equipped with three options to choose from Dell: hard drive 320GB 7200 rpm (and therefore more powerful than those present at 5400 rpm in most phones), card Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and an eight-cell battery.
Maximum performance for this type of platform …
Dell has clearly bet on the performance, despite a platform for low power consumption which is not really a vocation. The integrated graphics from Intel comes with 128 MB of dedicated DDR2 memory (64 MB cons in many other similar platforms), but most of the hard drive 7200 rpm, which provides a significant improvement in reactivity . So, the test “drive” PC Mark Vantage has a very good score of 4005 points, with a nice 905 points with 3DMark 2006. In comparison, the Butterfly Touch that we recently tested, based on the same platform but with 64MB of dedicated graphics memory and a disk of 5400 rpm, shows much more modest scores, respectively 2587 and 594 points.
… But a logically self-deceptive
The advantage of the performance of the Inspiron 13Z fades completely opposite to their autonomy. The notebook lasted only 4 hours and 42 minutes during our test, less is actually a battery-powered high-end eight cells. The Butterfly Touch for its part was 5 hours and 4 minutes with a single six-cell battery. The explanation is simple: the hard drive running at 7200 rpm and consumes significantly more than a 5400 rpm model.
In addition, the Pentium SU4100 operating with default voltage slightly higher than the Butterfly Touch, and, finally, it was impossible to disable the keyboard Bluetooth card. All these sources of consumption, which, in addition to the big screen of 13.3 inches (11.6 inches for the cons Butterfly Touch), have significantly decreased self-final.
Test and review conclusions
In short, this notebook relatively simple and efficient suffers an autonomy that is far from being commensurate with the claims of Dell. The configuration we tested is available from the manufacturer in a promotional price of 649 euros instead of 847 euros if they enter the code E-REF following on the home page of Dell: DMFR5-NRZ1301. Suddenly, the case is good, very good, but we advise those who want more autonomy to keep a 5400 rpm hard drive and to dispense with Bluetooth while keeping the battery with eight cells.
