The UltraSharp 3008WFP is the flagship high-end of Dell. A look of dreams, but able to improve performance.

The expectations before test
The latest 30-inch Dell screen looks to be very upscale. The manufacturer boasts an unbeatable design and an excellent LCD panel. It promises a response time of 8ms and a contrast ratio of 3,000:1 dynamic. The reality
From the first glance, one can easily say that this screen design has the most impressive we’ve seen. The elegance itself: the display cover is brushed aluminum front and behind the frame. A pure beauty, we gladly forget ethereal designs from Apple. The foot is also wonderful, it allows a height adjustment of the slab, but does not allow the switch to portrait mode.
Ergonomics maximum
Everything is designed to provide maximum opportunities to the user. It starts with a large number of video inputs behind the screen. And in this respect, difficult to do better than Dell, two DVI, one HDMI, two composite inputs, S-Video and CVBS, YUV component input, one VGA D-Sub classical DisplayPort a more modern inputs and audio outputs 3.5mm four USB ports, and even a memory card reader compatible with the formats xD / SD / MS / MMC and CompactFlash!
The 30-inch MultiSync LCD3090WQXi NEC, roughly the same price, is largely crushed in this area, it offers two DVI-D! Another advantage of size, the screen is guaranteed for three years. Interface configuration: could be better
The configuration interface is very complete, but his organization would have been better thought. You can choose between six profiles adjusting image rendering, including two standardized profiles sRGB and Adobe RGB. It is also possible to adjust the color channels in detail, select the type of gamma (PC or Mac) and configure a method PBP (Picture by Picture), which juxtaposes two video sources on the screen.
The control buttons of the interface are in front, in a fairly conventional and inconvenient to use. We would have preferred a small joystick control, or a cross direction, much more intuitive to use, as the NEC EA261WM.
Things are heating up hard!
Another important detail, the screen gets very hot. Its aluminum coating helps to dissipate this heat, but suddenly the top of the screen is very hot. We measured a temperature ranging between 45 and 51 ° on the upper edge of the screen after one hour of operation. A temperature impressive.
Because this screen uses as much energy. This is normal for a slab 30 inches IPS technology and a backlighting by traditional neon. Or 121 watts in operation, between 1.4 and 4.6 W and 0.6 W in standby off. In comparison, the NEC 30-inch consumes more: 143 W Normal!
Beautiful homogeneity
As discussed, the performance of the LCD panel are not perfect, but one thing we were immediately struck, the regularity of backlight over the entire surface. An image rendering for improvement
This is where the 3008WFP has unpleasantly surprised. The color reproduction has not performed well. Our tests of stability and loyalty of the RGB on different levels of gray have shown that the screen had not been properly adjusted at the factory. We tested the six color profiles, gamma remained stuck between 1.6 and 1.8, with limited success in terms of fidelity and stability, without being catastrophic. We had to carefully calibrate the screen to get the correct results in these three areas (including the gamma is increased to 2.2), but without achieving the excellent performance screen NEC MultiSync LCD3090WQXi obtained without calibration.
Test and review conclusions
The Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP SuperView suffers from its performance in contrast and color fidelity. They do not live up to its claims, while the screen has a perfect surface finish. We hesitate between three and four stars and finally we limit to three stars, considering the high price of this monitor luxury.
