NEC MultiSync PA241W

Monitor NEC PA241W is expensive, but what demonstration!

With its new PA241W, NEC offers an advanced solution for professionals and enthusiasts from the image.

Let it be said, this monitor PA241W NEC is not for everyone but the manic image that will pay about 1170 euros to get it. And 24 inches is worth it! The slab, technology-P (IPS Performance in Plane Switching), promises a higher quality image, especially a color rendering to a depth of 10 bits, or a palette of 1 billion colors to meet the professional and semi , professional image. Unable to suppress our instinctive curiosity geek, we had to try at all costs!

The PA241W is the heavy. The machine weighs 10 kg, its design is distinguished by massive lines, the screen is more than 8 inches thick, his foot is particularly impressive. It must be said that everything is built for work: the screen is at 16:10 (1920 x 1200), it can pivot to portrait mode, tilt from left to right, top to bottom and adjust the height 15 cm. For travel, the handle above the machine is very handy, light weight.

No HDMI

NEC offers a multitude of video inputs, but not as much as other professional screens. We will have two DVI ports, however, NEC has chosen to offer the DisplayPort, without going through the HDMI box. Exit also exotic video interfaces such as composite or component YUV! We find only a VGA D-Sub, last survivor of a terminal analog period.
Note that this PA241W also has three USB ports and an outlet for connecting a probe calibration. Two of these USB ports are very accessible, however, behind the screen, next to video interfaces. It’s a shame.

A slab blameless

Everything we expected of a high-end IPS panel is this: a brightness above 400 cd / m² (414, exactly), a contrast ratio of 1000:1 very close to advertised by the manufacturer (1035: 1, specifically) and angles of vision far superior to those of TN public (92 ° horizontal, 69 ° vertically).
The depth of black is less impressive than on Dell U2711, we have recently tested, Which displays a higher contrast ratio with a brightness lower. We finally measured a response time, excellent for this type of tile: 8.92 ms, 2 ms less than the Dell U2711.
The PA241W offers settings profiles RGB and Adobe RGB, which covers 98% of the gamut. The Manual color adjustment is carried out on six axes for maximum precision. That is at its configuration screen that impresses most.

Adjustments galore

The configuration interface of the monitor provides excellent ergonomics and offers a record number of video settings. Particular mention the adjustment of the level of depth of black or can opt for an automatic contrast and brightness, run with a sensor that scans the surrounding visual environment. It is also possible to precisely adjust the gamma curve.

Fully adjustable and very successful, the PIP is available on all video inputs. The two sources may be arranged one beside the other, full screen or not, and overlay mode, the size and position of the second source is fully customizable. Bluffing efficiency. Last refinement, the screen displays its carbon footprint and energy cost according to its settings, provided to adjust the values identified according to the country.
A single set of keyboard-mouse for two PCs

This screen is packed with technology, start with the most attractive: DisplaySync Pro, which controls two PCs with the same devices. Simply connect the keyboard and mouse on the USB ports of the screen and each of the two USB inputs to a different PC.
It then assigns a USB input to the video input that corresponds to the selected PC, the screen will load automatically switch the connection of devices on the good PC as soon as the user changes the primary video source. A kind of tinkered with USB KVM, a very good idea!

NEC has also incorporated many other technologies to screen. These include the Digital Uniformity Control, which automatically adjusts the backlight to achieve maximum uniformity over the entire surface of the slab and the X-Light Pro, which will correct the aging of the backlight with a brightness sensor, out- procedure that takes about 30 minutes. The results of the first technology were not obvious and we have not really tested the second on a visor.

NEC PA241W This is a small technological wonder, but it is very expensive for a 24 inch. The IPS panel logically consume more than a conventional TN (91.6 W), but still very reasonable for this type of technology. That is an excellent instructor, we advise users very demanding clientele. For a little cheaper, Dell offers the U2711A model of 27 inches less “pro”, more suited to the general public and semi-professionals.
