Samsung R610
A 16 inch notebook from Samsung
After Sony and Acer, it is now Samsung’s turn to present a 16-inch laptop. At first contact, we must admit we’re surprised by the size of the beast. Once unpacked, it is compared with 15 inches. The glossy black design is very beautiful but may pose problems to those who will constantly clean fingerprints.
The Samsung R610 is a 16-inch model. This size has the advantage of offering more space than a smaller model, thus it is possible to integrate a keypad next to the keyboard. If you spend entire days in order to enter numbers in a spreadsheet, you’ll appreciate him.
Comfortable keys and touchpad
The keys are comfortable and all have the same size. However, the keyboard showed some signs of weakness in the lower left part. By pressing the Ctrl key, the keyboard sank more than usual. That being said, the R610′s keyboard is very good. It also enjoys a unique feature by integrating the Ag + Silver Nano technology intended to eradicate bacteria. The battery has an indicator that knows the charging status without turning on the computer.
The touchpad of the Samsung R610 is nice and it has a fast scroll zone on its right side. The wrist rest does not collapse when pressed, but as we have said above, it is a real magnet for fingerprints. Finally, there is no button for shortcuts, with the exception of hotkeys on the keyboard, including those used to adjust brightness or volume.
Test and review conclusions
The connectivity of the Samsung R610 is distributed around the chassis. On the front edge there is an SD card reader. On the left side there is an Express Card slot, a microphone and headphone jacks, HDMI and VGA outputs and a USB port, and on the right a DVD burner and a second USB port. Samsung has also added two other USB ports on the back (four USBs in total) next to the Ethernet jacks (RJ45) and modem (RJ11). There are some lacks: an e-STA and Firewire (IEEE1394) used to connect an external hard drive or a DV / HDV, but if take a look at the price, there is no need to be choosy.
The positive points (pros)
Attractive chassis, full keyboard with number pad, true 16:9 screen.
The negative points (cons)
Short battery life, poor sound and video quality.
